Well, what do you know? After years of hoping for this, and including it on the So Many Songbooks soundtrack wishlist, we’ve just discovered a rich and most satisfying rendition of Vic Mizzy’s music for “The Ghost and Mr. Chicken” — arranged by Jordan Tolman and now available on Sheet Music Plus! Attaboy, Jordan! And gratitude for the ArrangeMe platform, which allows people to sell their arrangements of copyrighted (and licensed) songs.
This medley starts with a bewitching refrain from “The Haunted Organ,” then eases into the catchy main theme evoking our timid hero Luther Heggs —decked out in Barney Fife’s ol’ salt and pepper — karate chopping his way past the old Simmons mansion at midnight.
What’s that? You’ve never seen “The Ghost and Mr. Chicken”? You’re in for a treat. Let me clarify this.
Andy Griffith first suggested the idea for this sweet, smart, and charming little movie that stars his faithful friend and deputy. This was Don Knotts’ first major project after leaving “The Andy Griffith Show,” and it involved a number of AGS alumni, including writers Jim Fritzell and Everett Greenbaum and director Alan Rafkin. You’ll recognize actors in this film from “Mary Poppins,” “The Andy Griffith Show,” “Bewitched,” and more — giving it their all, and making you feel somehow like you’re walking down Disneyland’s Main Street on a summer day to spend a spooky night alone in the Haunted Mansion.
Universal Studios, famous for their monster movies, created this comedic gem. Vic Mizzy composed the wonderful score. We don’t know if he used Bon Ami, but after scouring the internet for years trying to find this sheet music, we “shear” are glad it’s finally here.
